The first question almost everyone asks after seeing their chart is whether their number is a good one. The inverted-triangle method has a direct answer, and it is not the one people expect: no number is good or bad. What decides how a number shows up in a life is whether it is lived 合道 — in accord with its way — or not.
The short version
- 数字能量学 (number energy) reads a birth date as a chart, not a single digit. Every number in that chart carries two possible expressions.

What is the inverted-triangle chart?
The inverted triangle (倒三角形, also called the triangle or pyramid chart) is the Chinese way of folding a birth date into numbers. Instead of adding every digit into one result, it keeps each step of the working.
Take 25 December 1988. The day reduces to 7 (2+5), the month to 3 (1+2), the first half of the year to 1 (1+9 is 10, then 1+0) and the second half to 7 (8+8 is 16, then 1+6). Those four seeds pair upward: 7 and 3 make 1 (10, reduced), 1 and 7 make 8. The two middle numbers pair once more: 1 and 8 make 9.
That apex is the root number (根数), and it always equals the Western life path number: add all eight digits flat and you get 36, which reduces to 9. The day of birth, reduced, is the day master (日主) — here, 7. So when someone calls themselves a “9号人” or a “7号人”, they are naming the apex of this triangle. What does 合道 mean in numerology?
合 means to accord with or fit; 道 is the way — the same character as in 道德 and 道理. In a number reading, 合道 describes a person living out the constructive side of what their numbers describe. Its opposite, 不合道, describes the same tendencies expressed in their distorted form.
The idea rests on something ordinary: a strength and a weakness are often the same trait at different settings. Decisiveness, overused, becomes rigidity. Generosity with no boundary becomes being taken advantage of. Caution, left unchecked, becomes paralysis. These are illustrations of the principle, not readings of any particular number — but they show why the method refuses to rank digits. A trait is not good or bad. How it is carried is.
So a practitioner reading your chart is not handing down a fixed fate. They are describing a range. At one end is you living the number well; at the other is the same number working against you. Where you sit on that range is the part the chart cannot decide for you.
Why the same number reads differently for two people
Two people born on the same day have identical charts. Anyone who has met two such people knows they are not identical people. Without 合道, that is a problem for the method. With it, it is the point: the chart is shared, the expression is not.
This is also why a good reading asks questions rather than only making statements. The numbers suggest where to look; the conversation finds out which side of each number is currently showing, and what would move it.
合道 in a compatibility chart (合盘)
The principle carries over to relationships. A 合盘 (compatibility chart) combines two or more birth dates into a single chart that describes the relationship rather than either person. Each pairing in it has a healthy way of relating and an unhealthy one.
That changes the question people usually bring. “Are we compatible?” assumes the numbers answer yes or no. Read with 合道 in mind, the chart answers something more useful: what does this pairing look like when both people handle it well, and what does it look like when they don’t? A difficult pairing handled with awareness can go further than an easy one handled carelessly.
合道 over time: the year and month charts
The same birth date can be folded against a specific year, month, day or hour to produce time charts — 流年, 流月, 流日 and 流时. Each describes the theme of that period. Here 合道 means working with the period’s theme rather than against it: pushing when the chart describes a season for pushing, consolidating when it describes a season for consolidating. The theme is the same for everyone who shares it; what each person does with it is not.
Can you change your numbers?
No, and under this idea you don’t need to. Your birth date doesn’t change, so your chart doesn’t either. What changes is which expression of each number you are living. That is a matter of behaviour, which is why 合道 cannot be purchased.
It is worth keeping that in mind whenever a reading ends in a sales step — an object to wear, a service to buy, a name to replace — offered as the way to correct a “bad” number. Under the principle this article describes, there is no bad number to correct. Decide for yourself what any product is worth; just don’t let fear of your own chart be what decides it.
